“It just multiplies our resources without actually physically adding all kinds of people to the workforce... We can do so much more with the people we have.”

The Computers for the Office Program (CFO)

The Computers for the Office Program (CFO) provides a comprehensive pathway into gainful employment in an office setting. The program creatively integrates instruction in Microsoft Office applications software (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher) with the development of organizational, communications, mathematical and design skills. The training program comprises 20 hours per week for 12 weeks. Students then intern for 4 weeks in an office setting where they apply their skills and gain work experience.

The program helps students to define their personal and career goals as they build their platform of computer, academic and workplace skills. The design of the CFO program has evolved since 2002 with CWL working in collaboration with the Resident Services Department of the Worcester Housing Authority.

Results: Seventy-five percent of the program's participants since 2002 have gained employment or enrolled in community college upon completion of the program.

Keys to Success:

  • The curriculum integrates computer and basic skills in a wide array of real-world projects that provide a meaningful context for learning and applying new skills.

  • A community of learners supports the students' reflection and planning, enhancing both the professional and personal sides of life.

  • A simulated workplace environment helps transition students into the world of office work and assists them in developing confidence.
